Mathiya Cooperative

Location: Mathiya village, Traditional Authority Mthilamanja; Mulanje District Products and Services: Baked products (Mandazi only, on a small scale), seed multiplication, cassava production and processing of High-Quality Cassava Flour (HQCF).

The group was formed in 2007 as a pigeon pea producing and selling group. The group worked with C:AVA from 2009, provided them with presser and grater and trained in HQCF production. In 2015 through C:AVA, the group was linked to GIZ under the More Income and Employment for Rural Areas Programme in Malawi.

Mathiya has been engaged in Business Training and Coaching offered by Umodzi Consulting in 2017 and 2019.

Key achievements

• Increase in supply of fresh cassava by registering new farmer’s clubs Opening of grocery business at the bakery
• The identification of new markets through end user demonstrations has also been a highlight
• Development of proper record system
• Mathiya cooperative has also been able to increase its members from 37 to 55
